Atlantic is a French manufacturer of thermal comfort equipment, founded in 1968, whose range covers heat pump water heaters, air-to-water heat pumps, electric radiators and electric water heaters. This guide sets out what is in each range, the technologies behind them, and which of them make sense in Egyptian conditions.
Heat pump water heaters — the Calypso range
Calypso is Atlantic's thermodynamic (heat pump) water heater line. Rather than heating water with an element, it moves heat from the surrounding air into the tank, which is why this category consumes a fraction of the electricity a conventional electric heater does for the same hot water.
Calypso VM is the all-in-one wall or floor unit, available in 100 L and 150 L, with 800 W or 1200 W heating output (1800 W on one 150 L variant). Atlantic rates it Energy Class A+ and quotes noise down to 37 dB(A). It operates on ambient air between 5 °C and 43 °C, or −5 °C to 43 °C in ducted configuration — a range that comfortably covers Egyptian conditions year round.
Two details matter more than the headline figures. First, the refrigerant: Calypso VM uses R290, with a stated GWP of 0.02 — effectively negligible, against the thousands scored by older refrigerants. R290 is propane, so it is flammable and its installation and servicing requirements are stricter; we cover that trade-off honestly in our guide to heat pump refrigerants. Second, the tank: Atlantic uses Steatite technology with hybrid ACI anti-corrosion protection — which, in a country with water as hard as Egypt's, is the specification that decides whether the unit is still performing in year eight. See why tank materials decide a water heater's life.
The wider Calypso family also includes Calypso Access and Calypso Split Inverter, the latter separating the heat pump unit from the tank.
Air-to-water heat pumps — the Alfea range
Alfea is Atlantic's air-to-water heat pump line for space heating and hot water. The range spans monobloc units, split systems, hybrid heat pump plus condensing boiler combinations, and ground source.
Alfea Excellia A.I. is the split unit aimed at larger houses, available at 11 kW and 14 kW in single and three-phase, and 16 kW in three-phase. Atlantic rates the 11 kW models A++ at 35 °C flow and A+ at 55 °C — a reminder of a principle that applies to every heat pump: efficiency is much higher when the system is designed around low flow temperatures, which is why heat pumps pair naturally with underfloor heating and need larger radiators than a boiler system would. Our underfloor heating guide explains why.
Alfea Extensa A.I. is the range positioned for standard domestic use, with a quoted COP of up to 4.5. Both carry Atlantic's NAVISTEM 400S controller with remote operation through the Cozytouch app, inverter-driven capacity control, and anti-corrosion treated aluminium fins with copper tubes. The Excellia line uses R410A refrigerant.
Electric radiators
Atlantic's room heating range covers three technologies: gentle heat radiators, extensive heat panels, and active heat convectors with HD heating panels, in outputs from 300 W to 2000 W.
The gentle heat line includes Accessio, a thermofluid radiator intended to feel closer to central heating than to a convector; Oniris Smart Pilot IO, a slim design radiator with smart energy-saving control; Furno Connect, a connected thermofluid model; and Agilia IO, a compact unit designed for tight spaces.
Electric radiators occupy a specific and useful niche in Egypt. They need no boiler, no gas connection, no flue and no pipework, which makes them viable in apartments and finished properties where a wet central heating system is not practical. The trade-off is running cost: every kilowatt of electricity produces exactly one kilowatt of heat, with none of the multiplication a heat pump provides. That makes them well suited to heating one or two rooms, or to properties used seasonally — and poorly suited to heating a whole villa continuously through winter.
Electric water heaters
Atlantic's conventional electric water heater range is extensive, spanning capacities from 30 L up to 300 L in wall-mounted and floor-standing formats. Named ranges include O'Pro Plus, O'Pro Turbo (3000 W element for rapid heating) and O'Pro Central Domestic; Expert (2000 W); Ego; Genius and Genius Steatite; the Steatite, Steatite Slim, Steatite Turbo (2100 W) and Steatite Central Domestic models; and Zeneo, which carries ACI hybrid dynamic anti-corrosion protection. Instant electric and point-of-use models complete the range for single outlets and compact spaces.
The technology distinction worth understanding is how the element is protected. In a steatite design the heating element sits inside a protective sleeve rather than in direct contact with the water, so it can be serviced without draining the tank and is far less exposed to scale. Combined with ACI anti-corrosion protection, this is precisely the specification that matters in hard water — and it is the reason two heaters of identical capacity can have very different lifespans in Egypt.
What matters when choosing in Egypt
- Water hardness first. Egyptian water is hard in many areas. Steatite element protection and ACI anti-corrosion are not upsells here; they are what determines service life.
- Size on fixtures, not bedrooms. Peak simultaneous demand and recovery rate decide whether you run cold, not tank litres alone. Our hot water sizing calculator works it out properly.
- Match the heat pump to low flow temperatures. Any air-to-water heat pump, Atlantic or otherwise, performs far better with underfloor heating or oversized radiators than with a conventional radiator circuit designed for a boiler.
- Be deliberate about refrigerant. R290 offers a near-zero GWP but brings stricter installation and servicing requirements. It should be a considered choice, not a default.
- Electric radiators are a room solution, not a villa solution. Excellent where no wet system exists; expensive as a whole-house strategy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Calypso and a normal electric water heater?
Calypso is a heat pump water heater: it moves heat from the air rather than generating it with an element, so it uses substantially less electricity for the same hot water. A conventional electric heater converts one kilowatt of electricity into one kilowatt of heat.
Does the Calypso VM work in Egyptian conditions?
Its stated ambient operating range is 5 °C to 43 °C, which covers Egyptian conditions throughout the year.
What is ACI and why does it matter here?
ACI is Atlantic's anti-corrosion protection for the tank. In hard water it is one of the main factors determining how long a water heater lasts.
Which Alfea size do I need?
That depends on a room-by-room heat loss calculation, not floor area. You can run it with our free load calculator.
Are electric radiators expensive to run?
Per unit of heat, yes — they are the most expensive option, because there is no multiplication of energy. They make sense for one or two rooms, or where installing a wet system is not practical.
Need help choosing?
Whichever brand you are considering, the specification should follow a calculation rather than a catalogue. Our engineers size every system from a survey — hot water calculator, heating load calculator, or book a free assessment.
